The par Tommy Fleetwood made at the 18th hole was just his seventh of the day. In between that and the first hole, which he also parred, the 31-year-old Englishman made seven birdies and five bogeys, most of which came in bunches.

The result was a round of 3 under that left Fleetwood the co-leader in the clubhouse at 3 under for the tournament. That hadn’t appeared to be in the cards when he made bogey at four straight holes, from Nos. 7 through 10, but Fleetwood then turned his game around and birdied the 12th and Nos. 14 through 17. All told, he came in with a scorching 31.

Fleetwood, looking for his first major win, is three shots behind leaders Cameron Young and Mito Pereira, who are tied for first at 6 under. Also at 3 under for the tournament and tied for fifth, was veteran American Chris Kirk, who made a 45-foot putt for an eagle at the 17th. Matt Fitzpatrick was also at 3 under through 11 holes.
